GAO REPORT

What's the Big Deal: ๐Ÿ’ฅ

(HHS) is tasked with leading and coordinating public health emergencies effectively, ensuring clear roles, consistent data, transparent communication, accountability, and a deep understanding of partners' capabilities. ๐ŸŒThe consequences of inadequate leadership and coordination in public health emergencies could have a profound impact. ๐ŸŒŸ Lives are at stake, economies can crumble, and public confidence can wane. ๐ŸŒ… Timely responses to emerging threats like pandemics or natural disasters demand streamlined roles, data-driven decisions, transparent communication, rigorous accountability, and a profound understanding of partners' capabilities. These elements form the bedrock of an effective emergency response. ๐ŸฅThe lessons learned from previous emergencies underscore the urgency of these improvements, as they impact our preparedness for the inevitable future incidents and ensure we learn from the hardship and losses of those who were impacted in the past.

Scherr, T. M., & Scherr, D. (2023, July 19). Long-Term Care Facilities in Emergency Preparedness Planning.

๐Ÿ’ฅWhat's the Big Deal:

Long-term care facilities play a vital role in caring for our Kupuna (seniors) in the Pacific, but they face unique challenges during disasters. ๐Ÿ‘ตOlder adults are more vulnerable and require specialized care during emergencies. ๐ŸŒŸ This issue intensifies for those in long-term care facilities and it is incumbent to have be well-prepared to safeguard our Kupuna during disasters.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mandates these facilities conduct risk assessments and establish comprehensive emergency plans to address potential hazards, care-related emergencies, communication interruptions, and power failures. ๐ŸŒŸEvacuation and shelter-in-place strategies must be developed to handle various scenarios like hurricanes, mass infections, and more.

๐Ÿ›ก️Past disasters have revealed critical safety failures in some nursing homes, leading to preventable fatalities. To address this, CMS, FEMA, and state agencies are providing resources and guidelines to enhance emergency preparedness in the hopes that establishing response standards, and facilities can improve response capabilities and reduce risks during disasters.
