⚡IMSPARK: AI Is Only as Clean as the Energy Behind It⚡

⚡Imagine… Digital Growth Designed Around the Grid⚡

💡 Imagined Endstate:

Imagine an AI economy where the expansion of data centers does not quietly reverse progress toward cleaner electricity. Digital infrastructure would grow alongside enough reliable low-carbon power to support it, rather than forcing older generation back into heavier use.

💥 What’s the Big Deal: The Cloud Still Plugs Into Something

Imagine a future where every proposed data center comes with a second question: What will sustainably power it?  The digital economy is not separate from the physical economy. AI may live in the cloud, but the cloud still connects to a power plant🔌.

AI can feel almost weightless because most people encounter it through a screen💻. Every prompt depends on physical infrastructure drawing electricity somewhere. As data centers expand, that invisible demand is becoming large enough to change how utilities plan and operate the grid. Bittle (2026) examines new federal data showing that U.S. electric-power-sector carbon emissions rose in 2025 as electricity demand increased and coal generation rebounded.

The numbers are beginning to show the effect📈. EIA reported that U.S. electric-power-sector carbon emissions increased 4 percent in 2025, while coal-fired generation rose 13 percent. The agency identified growing electricity demand from data centers and manufacturing as contributors to the increase in overall generation.

That does not mean AI alone caused coal's rebound🧾. EIA also points to weather, higher electricity demand, and changes in relative fuel prices. But data-center growth is adding a major new load at a time when grid planners had expected older coal generation to continue declining.

The scale of what may be coming makes this more than a temporary issue🏗️. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory now estimates that data centers could account for about 11.8 percent of U.S. electricity consumption by 2030, with plausible scenarios ranging from 9.5 to 15.3 percent.

The challenge is also about time⏱️. AI infrastructure can be constructed faster than entirely new power systems can be built. If new electricity demand arrives before sufficient cleaner generation and grid capacity are available, utilities may lean harder on resources already connected to the system.

For Pacific islands, there is a useful warning here🌊. Many island grids are smaller and have less room to absorb sudden large loads. As Pacific communities pursue AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation, computing capacity cannot be planned separately from energy capacity.

That does not make AI the enemy of decarbonization🌱. It means digital development needs an energy strategy. Efficiency, storage, grid modernization, and appropriately scaled clean generation become part of the same conversation as data centers themselves.

There is also a larger sustainability question 🪢. Artificial intelligence is increasingly promoted as a tool for addressing climate risk. Its credibility will be stronger if the infrastructure supporting it does not create new emissions faster than other parts of the economy can eliminate them.

🌐IMSPARK: Where Partnerships Power Opportunity Across the Ocean Continent🌐

🌐Imagine… A Digitally Connected and Inclusive Blue Pacific🌐

💡 Imagined Endstate:

Pacific Island nations operate as a unified, inclusive “Blue Pacific Continent,” leveraging shared digital infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and collective voice to drive economic growth, resilience, and global engagement.

💥 What’s the Big Deal:

Imagine a future where every Pacific community is digitally connected, economically empowered, and fully included in shaping the region’s destiny, where the Blue Pacific is not just a concept, but a coordinated force in the global system📡.

American Samoa’s recent engagement at the Pacific Agenda Summit signals more than participation, it reflects a strategic shift toward regional integration and digital empowerment. By convening with Pacific leaders, U.S. officials, and private sector partners, the delegation is actively working to translate policy into real economic outcomes, focusing on infrastructure, telecommunications, and investment pathways🛶.

At the center of this effort is digital infrastructure, particularly initiatives like the Le Vasa subsea cable, which aims to strengthen connectivity, resilience, and economic diversification across the region🌊. These systems are not just about faster internet, they are the backbone of modern economies, enabling education, telehealth, entrepreneurship, and regional collaboration.

Equally important is the emphasis on collective Pacific engagement🤝. By working with neighboring nations like the Cook Islands and aligning with broader regional efforts, American Samoa is contributing to a model where Pacific Island countries increase their bargaining power and shape development on their own terms .

This reflects a deeper vision: the Pacific is not a set of isolated islands, it is a connected “Blue Pacific Continent”🧭. In this framing, inclusion matters. Smaller nations and territories are not peripheral, they are essential nodes in a shared network of culture, economy, and strategy.
