Imagine a future where students do not have to wait until college, adulthood, or pain to learn why their families matter in the American story🌱. Education fights invisibility by giving memory a place to live. Foundations and Futures is not just a textbook. It is a public archive, a classroom tool, and a reminder that history becomes more honest when more people are finally allowed to appear in it.
There is a quiet harm in never seeing yourself in the curriculum. Students can sit through years of American history and learn about wars, civil rights, and social movements, while never being shown how deeply Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are woven into those stories. UCLA’s Foundations and Futures project responds to that absence by putting AAPI history in one free, open-access multimedia platform🪞.
The format matters📲. This is not a dusty textbook trying to survive in a digital world. It is built for students move between media. The platform combines written chapters, archival documents, artwork, videos, and podcast clips, turning the curriculum into a living doorway instead of a locked archive.
The deeper story is not technology. It is recognition🪶. AAPI history has often been scattered across university libraries that many students never get to enter. Bringing those materials together changes the doorway. A student does not have to already know where to look. The curriculum meets them where they are and then invites them deeper.
This also arrives in a polarized moment🧯. The project grew as ethnic studies became more contested and as anti-Asian hate reminded the country how dangerous invisibility can become. The response was not to retreat from history, but to make it more visible, more teachable, and more available. Learning each other’s histories is not division. It is one way a society remembers how to live together.
For Pacific Islanders, this visibility has to be handled with care🌀. Too often, “AAPI” becomes a broad umbrella where Pacific Islander histories are included in name but thinned out in practice. The promise of a platform like this is that it can make room for any specific refugee without pretending one story can stand for all.
