Imagine a future where every maritime community has a financial pathway built around its own realit🏝️. Rotuma’s expo shows that inclusion begins when systems stop expecting remote communities to come to them, and instead make the effort to arrive with tools people can actually use.
Sheehy (2026) reports that close to 40 percent of Rotuma’s population attended the island’s first Financial Inclusion Maritime Expo. The story matters because financial inclusion is not real if services never reach the people who need them🌊. In Rotuma, about 600 people gathered for two days at Ahau Government Station with Reserve Bank officials and private-sector partners. That is not just outreach. It is financial access becoming physically present.
The practical impact was immediate💼. The article reports that Rotumans had direct access to financial providers and that at least 160 new accounts were opened.
