The White House. (2023, October 20). Readout of White House Roundtable on Leveraging the Inflation Reduction Act for Safety-Net Health Organizations.

💥 What’s the Big Deal:

The Pacific region participating in the roundtable 🧩 will learn from the best practices and success stories of other safety-net health organizations nationwide and access the tax credits and grant programs created by the Inflation Reduction Act to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. 🌊The Pacific region will also share its unique challenges and opportunities related to climate change and health equity and collaborate with other stakeholders to find innovative and sustainable solutions.

Health care is a vital sector for the Pacific region, as it provides essential services and support for millions of people, especially those who are low-income, uninsured, or have complex medical and social needs. 🌍However, health care is also a significant source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change and its adverse impacts on health. 🏥 The Inflation Reduction Act, which passed by Congress in 2022, offers a historic opportunity for the Pacific region to transform its healthcare system into a more resilient and equitable one by helping safety-net health organizations lower their energy bills, reduce their environmental footprint, and enhance their preparedness and quality of care.

The White House Roundtable, launched in 2023, is a collaborative initiative that brings together safety-net health organizations, professional associations, philanthropies, and financial institutions to share their experiences and resources and leverage the Inflation Reduction Act to achieve their goals.

Telehealth is a promising and innovative way to provide medical care via phone, video, or the Internet. Telehealth can offer many benefits for the Pacific region, such as increasing access to care, especially for patients who live in remote or isolated areas or face transportation, mobility, or scheduling difficulties.✈️
Telehealth can also enhance the quality and efficiency of care by allowing patients to receive timely diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up and by reducing unnecessary hospitalizations, emergency visits, and travel costs. 🏥However, Telehealth faces many barriers and challenges, such as restrictive licensing, reimbursement, and privacy regulations, lack of broadband infrastructure and equipment, and low awareness and acceptance among patients and providers.

The 2024 state policy agenda for telehealth innovation provides a comprehensive and practical guide for policymakers and stakeholders in the Pacific region to address these issues and to create a more conducive and supportive environment for telehealth services.

VA News. (2020). Misconceptions about PTSD: Part one.

💥 What’s the Big Deal:

Post-traumatic stress disorder or (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as war, violence, abuse, or natural disasters.🗣️ PTSD can cause symptoms such as anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, and isolation. Regardless of age, gender, culture, or background, anyone can be affected by PTSD.👂 However, there are many misconceptions and myths about PTSD that can prevent people from seeking help, receiving support, or understanding their condition. Some of these myths include:

        • PTSD is a sign of weakness.
        • PTSD only affects veterans or people who have been in combat.
        • PTSD is not a real or serious disorder.
        • PTSD cannot be treated or cured.
        • PTSD is contagious or harmful to others.

These myths can create stigma and discrimination for people with PTSD and can also affect their self-esteem, relationships, and quality of life. 🌊In the Pacific region, where many people have experienced or witnessed trauma due to colonialism, militarism, migration, climate change, and other factors, PTSD is a prevalent and urgent issue that needs to be addressed.🙌 However, the Pacific also has a rich and diverse culture and history that can offer resilience, healing, and hope for people with PTSD. 🕊️By dispelling the myths and stigma around PTSD and by providing culturally appropriate and evidence-based interventions, the Pacific region can create a more inclusive, empathetic, and healthy community for all.

Zoning is a powerful and influential factor that shapes the physical, social, and economic landscape.  🌊Zoning determines what can be built, where, and how, and it significantly impacts the availability and quality of housing, transportation, infrastructure, and public services in a given area.🚗 However, the complexity and lack of transparency of zoning regulations can make it difficult for the public to understand and navigate the system, as it varies widely among thousands of local governments.  🌳The National Zoning Atlas is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to unlock the black box of zoning and make it more transparent, consistent, and accessible. Communities can benefit from using the National Zoning Atlas, as it can help people understand the impacts and implications of zoning and enable them to make informed and confident decisions about land use planning and policy.
